Most Manufacturers recommend shutting down the air-cooled units every 24 hours for 30 minutes to check the oil and top it off if needed.  Most liquid cooled units can go 48-72 hours.  

you want the vents on the sides of unit and back of unit are cleared if we get more than 12 inches.  Also remember if its  running on Natural gas to dig out the gas meter and regulator. 

The generator will need minimum clearance around unit of 3 feet on sides and in the front. Liquid cooled units require more usually 5 feet or more.  these units are designed to work in all elements so please do not cover them or build anything to cover them.  Also the Zombie boxes available aftermarket will damage and void factory warranties. 

Most air cooled units will last 10-15 years with proper maintenance and maybe a repair or two. Liquid cooled units could last up to 30 years with proper maintenance and repairs.
